"Exegesis," or the process of unfolding a text's original meaning, often refers to the work of a pastors as he seeks to understand a passage of scripture in order to preach it to his congregation. However, in "Visual Exegesis" the artist steps into the pulpit, as it were, and attempts to unfold a passage's meaning through image rather than word. In this book we will look at 34 full color digital drawings and examine how specific verses, doctrines, and biblical themes are expressed in each one. Image will always be the servant of word when it comes to the communication of the gospel of the glory of Jesus Christ, and Visual Exegesis is no exception. These pictures exist to point readers to the Triune God of the Bible as He has supremely revealed Himself to us in Jesus Christ. If the mental tethers forged between the text of scripture and the imagery found in this book can serve to deepen your understanding and love for God's word (and the God of the word), I will be very happy indeed.

I recommend Visual Exegesis, Vol. 1 whole-heartedly. Visual exegesis, or visual theology, has been part of our faith since John Bunyan’s "Map Showing the Order and Causes of Salvation and Damnation" was published in 1691. Visual exegesis is simply an image or a collection of images that display in pictorial form, truths from the Bible. Powers makes clear in his introduction what his intent is, which is to approach the Bible with the mindset of a pastor, except instead of exegeting the word with word, to exegete the word with picture, noting that picture doesn’t ever supplant the word.

Doctrinal concepts are difficult to visualize but Powers has done a masterful job of applying picture to even the most abstract of verses. His representation of Jeremiah 17:11 and Genesis 3:15 come immediately to mind. The pictures in his book are arranged by theme, which include Awaiting Immanuel, Behold Your God, Made Alive, Growth, Suffering and Perseverance, and Turning the Title Page, with a total of 35 biblical scriptures pictorially represented. Powers asks the question Can We Draw Pictures Representing Jesus? and offers his interpretation of the Second Commandment on the question in answer.

The drawings themselves are beautifully rendered, sensitive, and in some cases tearfully moving or thoroughly convicting. The book is packaged in a 8X8 dimension, so it's large enough to examine the pictures in detail but small enough to carry comfortably. Each depiction is accompanied by a thorough written explanation using scripture on the opposite page.

I've followed Powers since he founded his ministry and his growth is obviously Spirit-led and solid. His work is outstanding and I look forward to volume 2! I give the book 5 stars for its doctrinal credibility and illustrative beauty.

good work
Thoroughly amazed by the depth of this book, both visually and throughout the author's written text. Chris Powers "talks" to the reader as if you were side by side. His hand-drawn illustrations convey a message of Atonement, the "lostness" of mankind, and the saving Redemption of Jesus Christ.
Great artwork and I enjoyed the authors comments. Loses 1 star for image quality, had it been printed on a glossy stock the images and colours would be much more profound/vibrant. Considering all the blood, sweat and tears that clearly went in to this, it was slightly disappointing that the final printing process robbed so much from these glorious works. If this should every be reprinted in a gloss format, I would gladly spend the money to possess it again. Makes a great gift for those who love the Lord.
Chris's art is rich with theological depth. I appreciate his corresponding explanations in this book, which have allowed me to pull even more meaning out of his drawings. Definitely thought provoking; heart-stirring. Go ahead and buy it - it's worth it.
When I first discovered Full of Eyes' animations on youtube 8 years ago [...], I was immediately draw to them, and more importantly, to the the gospel message they so poignantly communicate. This book is the perfect companion to the collection of animated works Chris Powers has produced. It is a beautiful, tangible tool for more deeply understanding the passages and themes Chris draws from in his art. Chris is unafraid to delve into the not-so-pretty and not-so-comfortable aspects of the gospel story we are all woven into, yet he is faithful in each piece to point us to the HOPE and promise we have that the Lord is indeed making all things new and that Christ's work is central to the whole story.

Chris' work stands out against so much of the pop-culture "cushy" interpretations of scripture out there. He illuminates the scriptures with his all-at-once jarring yet achingly beautiful visual exegesis. Always true to the Word of God, and always focused on glorifying God with his art, Chris Powers gives us tools for deeper understanding our need for God's grace and salvation.

This book is also an excellent tool for sharing the gospel truths with others, and especially with kids. It has brought up so many wonderful questions and opportunities to share the gospel afresh with them. There are some wonderful children's bibles and resources out there for little ones, but I also believe that helping our kids process some of the "darker" sides of the story, and allowing them to retain the drama and darkness that is inherently there (as Chris so tactfully does) will only aide in driving home those truths for kids.

Some of the images may seem intense for very young ones, but my 3 and 5 year old girls have both enjoyed going through this book with me and are stirred deeply by the images. I would never want to "scare" them into believing of course, but letting them see a representation "darker" than their storybook bibles helps them better process the gravity of sin and the glory of Christ's saving work.

In short, I HIGHLY recommend this book and look forward to Volume 2!
